James Henry Bishop & Jane Lynch

c. 1819: James Henry Bishop was born in either Maryland or Delaware.

5 Feb 1820: Jane Lynch, the daughter of John Lynch and Rhoda Johnson, was born in Sussex County, DE.[1]

8 Jun 1836: The will of father Joshua Bishop was proved. In it, James was left a tract of land called "Good Success" in Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE.[2]

14 Sep 1842: James Bishop "of Worcester" married Jane Lynch "of Sussex".  The ceremony was performed by Rev. J. Bissey.  The license may have been obtained on 10 Sep 1842.[3]

1843 Tax List, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Henry Bishop was taxed $134.00 for "his person".  But why was he taxed on only his person if he had inherited "Good Success" in 1836?  Had he sold that parcel already?

29 Jul 1850 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer James H. Bishop 30, born MD, with property valued at $1,000; Jane W. age 30, born in Sussex Co, DE; John Lynch age 77, occupation "nothing", born DE; Lemuel Bull age 12; Mary A. age 3;  and John H. age 1.  Jane Bishop could not read or write.[4]  Who was Lemuel Bull?

25 Jul 1860 Census, Baltimore Hundred, Sussex County, DE: Farmer Henry Bishop 42, born DE, with real and personal property valued at $3,000 and $1,500 respectively; Jane age 42; Mary A. 14; John H. 9; Joshua 7; James 5; William 3; Hester I. or J. age 1; Mary B. age 20, married within the year.[5]  Who is this Mary?

The average value of real estate and personal estate for the 15 neighbors in 1860: real estate = $1,763, personal estate = $1,121.  One farmer, however, was quite wealthy.  When his enormous holdings - more than twice as large as other neighbor - are subtracted, the averages become $1,354 and $755.

15 Feb 1864: James died in Sussex County.   Jane had predeceased him.

15 Mar 1865: Ebe Walter, John H. Evans, and James Carey were ordered to assess the property of James H. Bishop on behalf of Joshua C., James, William, Hetty, Sarah C., and Maria E. Bishop, minor children under 14 who were under the wardship of [uncle] Joshua W. Bishop.  Joshua W. Bishop posted a bond of $600 as guardian, with John H. Hudson as security.[6]

30 Jan 1866: The three assessors appointed above reported their findings to the court: ". . . The mansion farm situated in Baltimore Hundred, county aforesaid, containing one hundred and fifty acres of land, and sixty acres of which is arable, the residue set in timber, oak, pine, gum, we therefore report and say that we estimate the yearly rental value of said land and tenement at eighty dollars yearly.  The improvements consist of one story dwelling house, sixteen by thirty feet, with two rooms on lower floor, colonnade and kitchen back, and adjoining the dwelling in tolerable good order; also smoke house and log barn, three corn cribs & stable in ordinary.  Upon the said premises there is a very small apple orchard . . ."[7]

At least three of the children were enumerated in other households in the 1870 Census: Hetty in the home of William and Martha McCabe, Mariah with Stephen W. and Mariah Murray, and William with Joseph and Jane Lynch.   Were these people relatives; and if they were, what was the relationship?

Children of Joshua and Charlotte Murray Bishop: The children of Joshua Bishop are very confusing.  Robert appeared on the 1880 Census at age 16, but hadn't been listed with the family in 1870.  James M. Bishop (m. Hester Derrickson c. 1875) was enumerated with the family in 1870 at age 15, but not in 1860.   Some researchers have claimed that Joshua also had children named Ida C. (m. John M. Stephens 12 Dec 1878), Joshua, and George Everett Bishop (16 Feb 1883 - 8 Sep 1921; but none of these purported children appeared on any census.  And would Joshua have named a second son George when his elder son George Curtis Bishop was still alive?  In addition, one child of Mary Ann was said to have been born on 19 Oct 1875 and to have died in 1876.

In 1865, Joshua was also the guardian of his nephews and nieces, Joshua C., James, William, Hetty, Sarah C. and Mariah E.  However, none of these children were enumerated with the family in 1870.

Reuben West Bishop and 1) Nancy W. Collins 2) Margaret E. Wealton

Jun 1834: Reuben was born Maryland or Delaware.

1834: Nancy W. Collins was born in Maryland.  Was she the daughter of James Collins and the sister of Charles C. Collins?  Bobby Collins claims her parents were William and Miranda Powell Collins.  Mary Elizabeth and Charles Collins, however, were supposedly the children of James and Miranda Powell Collins.  Did Miranda Powell marry two brothers in turn; or was Nancy's father actually James Powell.

26 Feb 1859: Reuben, age "26 . . . born in Sussex County, Delaware" married Nancy Collins.[67]

1860 Census, Worcester County, MD (St. Martin's District): Farmer Reuben Bishop 26, born MD, with real and personal property worth $650 and $150 respectively; Nancy 22, born MD; Joshua 3/12, born MD.[68]

2 Aug 1870 Census, Accomack County, VA (Township of the Islands, Bell Haven P.O.): Sailor Reuben W. Bishop 36, born DE; Nancy W. 34, born DE; Joshua M. 9; Charles H. 8; Alfred W. 7; Edward 5; John B. 3; David B. 1.  They were listed next door to Joseph B. and Charlotte Collins Lynch.[69]

In a pamphlet entitled "Heritage of the Sound Church, Founded 1779": "It has been stated [that] the quarter acre site was donated on Jan 16, 1871 by Charles Collins to James Brasure, Jacob H. Brasure, Edward W. McCabe, [and] John R. McColum, trustees.  The deed mentions that the meeting house had been erected and that it was called 'Union Sound M.E. church'.  It also describes the site as being on the road to Finicar's Island, which was probably Fenwick Island misspelled.  Pioneers in rebuilding the church were James Brasure, Jacob Brasure, Ruben Bishop, Alfred Lynch, Exekil Williams, Lemuel Williams, Thomas Adkins, John Williams, and Edward Williams".  The Sound Methodist Church is located approx 1 mile east of Williamsville on Route 54 about 11 miles from the ocean.[70]  James Brasure was the son of Mitchell Brasure, Charles Collins and Alfred Lynch were Reuben's brothers-in-law, and Thomas Atkins may have been Reuben's brother-in-law. Jacob Brasure is a mystery.  Could the name actually have been Joshua H. Brasure?

13 May 1877: Oysterman Reuben Bishop married "Margt E. Whealton", age 18, in Chincoteague.[71]  .  The ceremony was performed by P. Bowden Sr.[72]  Margaret, daughter of Joshua and Nancy Wealton, had been born on 21 Mar 1857 on Chincoteague Island.

4 Jun 1880 Census, Accomack County, VA (Chincoteague Magisterial District): Oyster planter age 45, born MD DE DE; wife Margaret age 23, born VA; son Charles, a laborer, age 19; Alfred W. 17; Reuben E. 15; John R. 13; Daniel W. 9; Mary E. 6; and Lewellyn, one year old female.  Lewellyn was the only child to have been born in Virginia.  The family was listed between James Bishop and Joshua Brasure.[73]

15 Sep 1984: Reuben was listed as one of the witnesses for the Commonwealth of Virginia in its warrant  against key members of "the Band".  For more information on information, see "What was this "organized band?" in Generation 4 and/or The New York Times, "Lynch's Sanctified Band".
