Hale: Generation 2
The Children of John Hale & Annie Shane
Any family stories mentioned below originated with youngest child Grace Hale Gaugh of Maryville, Missouri. Grace was adopted by another family and thus had no contact with her siblings until 1905. She remained in contact after that. As the stories filtered down through two more generations, however, they no doubt became subtly, perhaps significantly, altered.
Lula Hale
1868: Lulu [or Lula] Hale was born in Tennessee, probably Nashville.
16 Feb 1888: Lulu Hale, age 20, married John C. Gaddie, age 27, in Jackson County, MO, the ceremony performed by Pastor C. L. Chilton.[1] Was this our Lulu? The age certainly would have been appropriate; but nine years later she was using her maiden name . . .
1897 Kansas City Directory: "Hale, Lulu steno rms 707 Oak". Sisters Nellie and Daisy were listed at the same address.
The family in Maryville, MO always said that Lulu had married a certain Mr. Jenkins, owner of a music store. Sure enough, there was a J. W. Jenkins & Sons Music Company in Kansas City. In 1929 the company's vice president was Fred B. Jenkins with a wife named Lula. On 26 Jul 1952, Lulu Jenkins, wife of Frederick Butler Jenkins of 837 West 58th Terrace in Kansas City, died of heart disease. Husband Fred provided the personal information for the death certificate. Lula had been born in Illinois on 25 Jun 1870. She was a widow when she married Fred. The birth year and place, the fact that she was a widow, could certainly agree with our Lulu; but he also stated that she was the daughter of Malcolm Bliss! To complicate matters further, niece Helen Gaugh Breidenthal was certain that Fred, Lula's brother, was a piano tuner. A Fred N. Hale was listed as a tuner for J. W. Jenkins & Sons during the first decade of the 20th century.
Walter H. Hale & Emma Jane Melroy
30 Sep 1870: Walter Hale was born in Ray Station, Schuyler County, IL. On his death certificate, the date is 20 Sep 1872, although he listed his month and year of birth as Sep 1870 in the 1900 Census. In fact, all censuses would indicate a birth in 1870.
15 Sep 1877: Emma Jane Melroy was born in Phillipsburg, NJ, the daughter of Joseph S. and Elizabeth Wagner Melroy.[2]
1893/94: Walter and Emma were married when Emma was 16 and Walter was 23.
According to the family, Walter worked in the Kansas City train yard as a switchman while also operating a farm off Highway 71 between St. Joseph and Kansas City. Also according to family, Walter was an alcoholic like his father John.

Fred worked as a street car supervisor in Kansas City. At an unknown date, but believed to have been in the 1920s, he was mashed between two strretcars when he ran to switch tracks to prevent them from colliding. He stayed with the Gaugh family in Maryville, nursed by sister Grace, while recovering from his injuries.

Daisy's actions could be described at best as eccentric. For instance, she once stopped a priest on the street and insisted on kissing his ring. She so strongly resembled her younger sister Grace Hale Gaugh that she was often mistaken for her, so such behavior naturally caused embarrassment. Grace's husband Charlie finally purchased a house for Daisy in Kansas City, presumably an adequate distance from Maryville. (The Gaughs once had new wallpaper installed in the house, only to have Daisy paper over it with newspaper.)
Daisy was married five times, Kansas City railroad worker Fred or Frank Gould being the last.

10 Apr 1904: Nellie married William Joseph Benoit in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Kansas City, MO. Payne and Spickler claim the year was 1924, in light of the 1910 Census, the year must have been 1904.
20 Apr 1910 Census, Kansas City, Jackson County, MO: Montgomery Ward stock clerk William J. Benoit 34, IL Canada Canada, married for 6 years, his first marriage; wife Nellie 31, IL TN TN, married for 6 years, her second marriage, and mother of 1 child, still living; Lulu 2, MO IL IL. The family is residing at 2104 Charlotte St. with several other families, apparently and apartment house.[15] According to niece Grace Gaugh, daughter Lula was adopted. Grace's family in Maryville also believed that Nellie married a "Frenchman", name unknown, who first worked for the streetcar company in Kansas City and then became a policeman. He was shot and killed in the line of duty. Joseph Benoit was of French Canadian ancestry, but his cause of death was "aortitis". Was Nellie's first husband a policeman who was shot on duty?

18 Nov 1887: The Linn County Probate Court ordered that Josie Hale, a "poor child . . . whose father is worthless and a habitual drunkard and whose mother is not living" be bound to O. H. Case until 18 years of age, "the said Josie Hale being ___ six years of age last March, for the purpose of learning and acquiring the occupation of a housemaid and the performance of such duties as are generally performed by white females on the farms of this county generally".
