NANCY'S DEAD RELATIVES
Table of Contents
We must not see any person as an abstraction.
Instead, we must see in every person a universe
with its own secrets,
with its own treasures,
with its own sources of anguish,
and with some measure of triumph.

This surname has been spelled in various ways from generation to generation, census to census, and even signature to signature by the same person. In general, the Pennsylvania Breidenthals have tended to use "ei", while the Arkansas Bridenthals have omitted it. But just to confuse the situation, Claude Bridenthal, a member of the Arkansas family, changed the spelling to Breidenthal after discussions with Oren Breidenthal in the 1920s. Thus Claude's descendants have used Breidenthal.

● Notes:
After a search of many years, I became convinced that Samuel and Ruth Baker Johnston of Ward's Fork in Charlotte County, VA, were the parents (or very close relatives) of our Samuel Johnston of Leatherwood Creek in Henry County, VA. The evidence, while circumstantial, was compelling. Recent Y-DNA tests contradict that conclusion. A male descendant of James Johnston of Turkey Cock Creek in Henry County, who almost certainly was the son of Samuel and Ruth Johnston, differs substantially from two descendants of our Samuel of Leatherwood. While all three men tested show the unique characteristics of the Johnston Y-chromosome, the results nevertheless indicate that James and Samuel could not have been closely related and, ipso facto, Samuel Johnston of Ward's Fork would not have been the father of our Samuel Johnston of Leatherwood. That would also eliminate Caleb and Martha Brooks Baker as his grandparents.
I nevertheless find that paper trail hard to dismiss. Could we have a case of false paternity? If so, it did not occur in the generations leading down from Samuel of Leatherwood's son Joseph to our two testees, who varied by only one out of 67 markers. It would be informative if a male descendant from another of Samuel and Ruth Baker Johnston's sons (Caleb or William) could be tested. Although there were two main families with this surname in Rockingham County, North Carolina during the same period - one on Troublesome Creek and one on Buffalo Creek - there were other Lemons/Lemonds residing on other creeks who may or may not have been offshoots of these two families.
Were the two families related? There's been no references in documents to indicate that they were. According to 10 marker Oxford tests from three contributors, Y-DNA project coordinator Earl R. Layman has concluded that male descendants of John Lemon of Buffalo Creek and William Lemon of Troublesome Creek differ by two repeats. That would indicate that the two Rockingham County patriarchs "were probably not related". That answers one question, but other questions remain: 1) What and/or where was the origin of our Troublesome Creek Lemonds; 2) Was our Joseph related to either George or William Lemonds of Troublesome Creek? A 67 marker test could provide the answer to both. Those interested are encouraged to visit Earl R. Layman's website at www.lehmanfamilyhistory.com.
The surname was variously spelled, Lemond, Lemmond, Lemmonds, Lemonds, Lemmons, Lemons, Lemmon, and Lemon. The first vowel might be written or transcribed as "i". And to further stymie the researcher, the first letter might resemble an "s", thus "Simmons". Names in the Notes appear exactly as they did in the original document. For chapter titles, charts, and comments, I've settled on "Lemonds" for the Troublesome families and "Lemons" for the Buffalo Creek families; but I must admit, the decision's rather arbitrary.
